PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle gave Garrett Jones a few days off this week, freeing the first baseman to explore ways to work out of a miserable funk that threatened to banish him to the bench indefinitely. Air Jordan Nz Online . A lot of time in the batting cage and a couple of helpful hints from a new teammate provided Jones with the confidence boost he desperately needed. Jones hit his 100th career home run and drove in four runs as the Pirates beat St. Louis 5-0 on Friday night to move into a tie with the Cardinals for the lead in the NL Central. "Big game, big series," Jones said. "I made some adjustments and took it into the game and I felt good. I felt aggressive and strong and it was nice to be able to contribute to the win." A pep talk from outfielder Marlon Byrd helped. The veteran, acquired by the Pirates in a trade with the New York Mets on Tuesday, pulled Jones aside and delivered some advice culled from 12 years of bouncing through seven big league cities. "He came up to me and said youre a guy who can hit 30-40 home runs," Jones said. "He started talking to me about hitting and the few things he mentioned to me just made a lot of sense." Hard to argue with the results. Jones finished with three hits while matching his entire RBI total for the month in one night. Russell Martin added his 12th homer of the season for Pittsburgh. Jose Tabata and Neil Walker got two hits as the Pirates moved within four victories of their first winning season in 21 years. Francisco Liriano (15-6) allowed just two hits over eight innings, walking two and striking out six to reach the 15-win plateau for the first time in his eight-year career. The left-hander struggled in his previous start last weekend in San Francisco but bounced back with one of his most dominant performances of the season. Liriano credited his resilience on a newfound maturity that allows him to move on quickly following a rough night. "Whatever is done is done, nothing you can do about it, just focus on the next start," Liriano said. Having an early lead to work with certainly helped. Jones came in hitting just .119 in August but broke out against St. Louis starter Shelby Miller (12-9). Jones hit a two-run double in the first inning to give Pittsburgh the lead, added a moon shot to the seats in right field off Miller in the fourth and followed it up with an RBI single in the fifth. "Garrett put in a lot of work and it paid off big time for us," Hurdle said. The Cardinals came in surging after they erased a four-game deficit earlier this month. St. Louis arrived at PNC Park with a one-game lead and a chance to create some breathing room over Pittsburgh and Cincinnati heading into September. Instead, things tightened up after Miller again struggled to get outs against the Pirates. The rookie right-hander is in the midst of a breakout season but fell to 0-4 versus Pittsburgh, though his hitters havent done him any favours. The Cardinals have produced just one run in Millers four starts against the Pirates. Miller lasted just 4 1-3 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three. He struggled with his command, twice walking Liriano - who came in hitting just .075 - on four pitches. "I made some mistakes with some pitches and they put good swings on them," Miller said. "At the end of the day, they were better than us. I was just battling all night. It wasnt a good night." It certainly was for Liriano, who is in the midst of a mid-career revival with the Pirates. The 2006 All-Star pitched a complete game in a 5-1 win at St. Louis two weeks ago and was even sharper in front of a packed PNC Park that is still getting used to being in the thick of a pennant race. The Cardinals managed only one runner in the last six innings, and no one got past second base in the entire game. "Theyre waiting for him to make a mistake out of over the plate but hes not making many mistakes then you dont have too many options," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "We hit some balls hard but not enough of them in a row then we gave him the lead and that made it even tougher for us." NOTES: Pittsburgh All-Star closer Jason Grilli will pitch one inning for Double-A Altoona on Saturday as he continues his rehab from a strained flexor tendon in his right forearm. Grilli has been on the 15-day disabled list since injuring the arm against Washington on July 22 ... The Cardinals bolstered their bullpen on Friday when they acquired reliever John Axford from Milwaukee. "Theres a lot of experience there, a lot of upside," Matheny said. "Its hard to forget that two years ago this guy was one of the top relievers in the game." ... Lance Lynn (13-8, 4.02 ERA) starts for the Cardinals on Saturday against A.J. Burnett (6-9, 3.18). CALGARY -- A preoccupied Canadian womens hockey team fell 5-1 to the United States on Thursday as the Canadians tried to come to grips with the sudden resignation of their head coach. Canada wasnt in the game from the outset. Head coach Dan Church left Calgary in the morning without addressing the players. He told The Canadian Press he felt the organization lacked confidence in his ability to defend the Olympic gold medal in February. Assistant coaches Danielle Goyette and Lisa Haley are co-coaching the team until Churchs replacement is named. The loss snapped Canadas three-game winning streak against the Americans since losing to the them in this years final at the world championship in April. Canada mustered just 10 shots on U.S. goalie Jessie Vetter in the first two periods and 16 overall at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary. Alex Carpenter, Brianna Decker, Hilary Knight and Meghan Duggan scored with Megan Bozek adding an empty netter for the U.S. Defenceman Tara Watchorn scored the lone goal for Canada after they fell behind 3-0. Goaltender Shannon Szabados stopped 24-of-28 shots. "It was an emotional day," Montreal forward Caroline Ouellette said. "A lot of different feelings around the team. "I suspect thats always the case when a head coach steps down in the NHL. Its just never happened to us. I think we have some people who are feeling mixed emotions. "Thats not an excuse. We clearly were not the better team tonight. Theres a lot of areas of our play that were exposed and that we werent good at. Our passing wasnt sharp, our changes, and those are details we cannot have go that bad. "Maybe we were cruising a little bit having three successful games against them. They took what made us successful in the past games and shoved it at us. They were better on the forecheck and quicker on loose pucks." Goyette, who won gold medals in womens hockey with Canada in 2002 and 2006, pointed out major distractions can happen at the Olympics and the team must learn to play through it. "Any situation like that can happen at the Olympics," she said. "It could happen at the world championship. If something happens really major, we have to be able to turn the switch for two and a half hours and play the game and ttake care of business. Air Jordan Nz. " Canadas all-time leading scorer Hayley Wickenheiser suffered a lower-body injury on her second shift. The forward went down in the neutral zone, got up slowly and skated in pain to the bench. She briefly returned to the ice late in the first period, but did not appear the rest of the game. "The doctor had a quick look at her," Haley said. "She doesnt feel its anything too serious. Obviously theyre going to take another look at it tomorrow to see how it responds, but everybody is pretty optimistic its going to be a day-to-day thing." Canada and the U.S. scheduled six exhibition games against each other prior to the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Canada won the first two and also beat the Americans 4-2 in the preliminary round of the Four Nations Cup tournament in November. The two sides meet again Dec. 20 in Grand Forks, N.D., Dec. 28 in St. Paul, Minn., and Dec. 30 in Toronto. The U.S. was also upset 3-0 by Finland in the Four Nations tournament, so they were highly motivated to beat Canada at home on Thursday. The Americans have individual speed and skill, which makes them lethal on the power play. They scored twice with a man advantage. "Weve just been working on getting better," U.S. head coach Katey Stone. "We need to get better in our end. That has been the primary focus since November, honestly. Not throwing pucks around and chasing pucks. Trying to possess as many pucks as we can and working our way up the ice zone by zone. "It sounds really dull, but its paying dividends for us. Weve got plenty of kids who are creative offensively, explosive offensively. We let them go, but weve got to take care of their own end." Canadas team game has been superior because the women play high-tempo games against male midget triple-A teams. But the host teams game was disjointed Thursday. "We have to respect Dan Churchs decision, but at the same time we have to go to work," Goyette said. "But, hey, were human. Right now its difficult for the team and difficult for everybody around the team "Tonight it was hard to focus, but we cant use that as an excuse. I dont think we played the game tonight. I think we were watching the game and it cost us."
